Day 9:
Went into town with Joel and Alex.  Did internet stuff all day.  Joel and Alex came to our place to watch both Hostel movies.
Day 10:
Went around town again and did some shopping for the Maninjau trip.
Day 11:
Joel's boss Ronnie drove us to Danau (Lake) Maninjau.  He got us a place at the Maninjau resort.  We got all settled in then went for a tour of the resort.  Saw the pub, karaoke bar, pool room, swimming pool......... this place had it all.  We decided to go into the town to check it out.  We walked all the way there.  It took around 2.5 to 3 hours to hike down the winding roads that clung to the mountain face.  It was pissing it down with rain so we all had our rain jackets on apart from Joel who decided to use a dried out palm tree leaf hat to get shelter from the rain.  All the locals got a big kick out of that and we're laughing at us on our way down.  It was a great idea to walk down instead of drive as we got to see tonnes of macau monkeys and a few illusive red monkeys which didn't hang around long enough to be photographed.  Once we got to the town we didn't find too much to do.  We hiked around a little to get the lay of the land then took the bus back up the mountain to our resort.
Day 12:
Today was Alex's 24th birthday, so she had the biggest say in what we did for the day.  We ate breakfast in the resort then took the bus down to the town.  We rented bikes and took off to find a good spot to swim in the lake.  We got lost down a road leading to the lake, so Joel went to talk to some of the local people that lived there to see if he could get the low down.  He ended up coming back to tell us that a family that lived in a small bamboo house on the lakeshore said that we could use their canoes for free if we wanted.  We first tried a four man canoe.  They were all carved out of a solid tree trunk and were very unstable!  We all had a good laugh as we tried to negotiate the canoe with all of our stuff in there with us, including cameras.  We ended up around 10 ft. from the shore when we decided that this was probably a bad idea.  We definitely didn't feel too comfortable in the four man and all the locals were laughing at us from the shore as we almost tipped the canoe a number of times.  We decided that if we split the load and took two canoes out it might be easier to control them............ WRONG!  The small one that Erin and got into was even more tippy and Joel and Alex weren't having much more luck in the larger canoe.  One of the locals took pity on us and helped us strap the two canoes together and took us for a ride out around a small island about 500 meters from the shore.  We saw a big monitor lizard on the island.  He then took us to his fish farm.  A lot of the locals had koi fish farms located close to the shore.  It was like a mini water world with all floating houses on the water with netted sections for each different breed of fish.  He let us walk around the floating barge and feed his fish.  There were hundreds!  It looked like a piranha feeding frenzy when you threw food into the water.  We got back from the canoe ride and back onto the bikes to find a swimming spot.  We found a path leading through rice paddy fields leading to the lake.  I took off down the path at full speed thinking everyone was behind me.  When I got to the lake there was no sign of anyone behind me.  Eventually they showed up.  Erin was covered from head to toe in mud as she'd fallen off her bike into one of the rice fields.  She did not look happy!  But I couldn't help laughing (and after Erin cooled off, neither could she).  We had a nice swim, then biked back into town.  The bikes were crap.  There might as well not have had seats on them as it felt like you were just sitting right on the seat post.  We dropped the bikes off then took the bus back to the resort.  Had a nice meal there.  Went to play some pool, then went back to our rooms and played "Name headbands" until the wee hours of the morning.
Day 13:
Had breakfast at the resort then we were picked up by a minibus to take us back to Bukittingi.  Didn't get up to too much for the rest of the day.  Had an early night to catch our flight out the to Medan next day.
