We headed to the massive mountain range with tents, sleeping bags and hopes of catching glimpse of a Black Bear.

We set out a route that meant a 2 mile walk on the first day followed by 10 on the second and 3 on the third. After setting up camp, we gathered fire wood and excitedly tried to build a fire in the backcountry (no toilets,  water or anyone to be seen) campground. Sadly our self feeling of manliness got dented slightly when we discovered that this was harder than in the movies, especially when all the timber was pretty wet. After a few games of cards, and a supper of beef jerky and cereal bars we went to sleep by 9.

It wasn't long however until we were awake again. The temperature seemed to be dropping by the minute, and the additional layers of clothing seemed to do no good. With about an hour of sleep to our name, shivering, the feeling of uncomfortable was made worse by a rustling sound outside. We had a midnight visitor. Paralyzed by a concoction of the cold and admittedly fear of the beast outside we remained in the tent and sat out the night.

Was it a racoon, bear, wart hog? None of us know for sure, what we did know is that it was the worst night sleep any of us had ever had. That and that this would be the last piece of camping we do on the trip!
