Flag of United States  , Virginia
Wednesday, November 14, 2007

After a delicious, not really diet friendly, breakfast we headed into the centre of Richmond to the Museum of the Confederacy and the CSA (Confederate States of America) White House.  The White House was where Jefferson Davis and his family lived in 1861 - 1865 while he was the President of the Confederate States.  It was furnished as it would have been when they were in residence - and they had a liking for bright, bold, dark, rich patterns!

The Museum has a huge collection of Civil War artefacts which was interesting but not as educational as the set up yesterday.

This afternoon we went to the Virginia Historical Society where there is an exhibit about Robert E Lee (the main Confederate General) and Ulysses S Grant (the most successful Union General) which provides the opportunity to compare the two.  We decided that they were both impressive men.  Grant had more soldiers and resources which gave him a significant advantage but both were great leaders and strategists.  Interestingly neither was strongly in favour of slavery - which seems to have been one of the major causes of the conflict.
