Today we drove the 80 miles from Hampton to Richmond and went straight to a Historical complex.  We spent time in the National Parks exhibit which covered the various Civil War battlefields around Richmond.  There was also an exhibit of photos taken of Richmond around the 1860s era.  It tuns out that one famous photographer, Mathew Brady, who "took" thousands of photos of the Civil War was actually nearly blind by this time and took virtually no photos - all "his" photos were taken by his army of photographers without them being given credit.

Then we went to a Civil War Centre that has a great exhibit covering the Civil War from three perspectives:  the Union, the Confederate and Black Americans.  It was enlightening to learn how much Blacks impacted the War.  In the south the estimate is that 80-95% of white males aged between 17 - old (we don't remember the upper age) fought.  They were only able to do this because the blacks were used as labourers, cooks, etc in the War zone and to take the place of the whites in civilian life.  It was not until 1865 (too late) that the Confederates decided to allow/ draft blacks into their army.  In contrast the Union offered freedom to blacks and enticed them to volunteer for their army however paying them less than the white soldiers.  We really enjoyed this exhibit.

Our latest accommodation is another great find.  We are on the third/ second floor.  We have a bedroom, sitting room and bathroom - yes three rooms.  The owners have three Yorkshire Terriers but they are kept away from clients so Tom is fine with them.
