We took off on our own and drove into Fort Myers to visit the Edison/Ford winter Estates. These were the surprisingly modest winter homes of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. Ford was16 years younger than Edison and looked up to him as his mentor. The two became close friends and Ford would spend two weeks every summer in his house and spend time with the Edison family. As usual, we spent several hours exploring the complex, including taking a tour with a guide. The houses look over the Caloosahatchee River (as hatchee means river in the local Indian tongue, this is actually the Caloosa river river - but that's probably being pedantic) with its cool breezes.
With the exception of our excursion to Fort Myers we travelled in comfort in the back of Patty & Pete's Mercedes. Pete is an excellent driver, fast and sure - not good for conversation between front and back seats though.
That evening we went to an excellent restaurant, Truluck's in Naples and had first of the season Stone Crab as well as Alaskan Red King crab - yet another light, meagre meal!!
