The next day I headed up to a small lake with a couple of American guys I'd met. The trip up was by taxi and the poor driver hadn't ever done it before. The road was so bad that we had to get out and walk sometimes so that the car could get past the potholes and rocks in the road. It is a great day walk with heaps of challenging terrain and spectacular views. Here's me at the lake:
We decided to head up above the lake to see if we could scale one of the surrounding peaks, but once we got up a hundred metres, one of the guys started to get headaches and nausea, so we descended quickly to the safer lower altitude. Heres the view from the top of the climb:
After getting back to the start of the walk we were supposed to follow a trail back to a nearby town where we could get a taxi, but we managed to get the wrong trail which led us on a 3 hour trek along a beatiful ridge almost all the way back to Huaraz. It was a great mistake though - We walked back through quaint rural villages and saw the way the locals there lived in a way we wouldn't have been able to in normal travelling. Exhausted, we got back to Huaraz and I ran around like a headless chicken getting myself ready for the Santa Cruz trail the next day with Mike, Jessie, Michelle, Aubrey and Ray who I'd met in the hostel the night before.
