I got into Bergen and knew at once I liked this city. Situated on a large fjord between mountains, the old port city still bears much of its history and has a real old-town feel about it in some areas. It rains in Bergen on average 275 days a year, so I wasn't expecting to top up my tan (which is starting to suffer a bit from lack of upkeep).

First thing I did was get stuck into looking around. It's a fairly small city and really easy to walk around. The oldtown area is just by the water and has all these long 3 story wooden buildings that were originally warehouses and trading businesses and now are full of souvineer and sweater shops (The Norwegians must love their sweater shops - they are every where I go). I headed around the waterfront to discover the world renowned fish market. This place has stall upon stall of fresh fresh seafood, and most of them sell sandwiches, or cooked seafood which you can eat right away and there's so much choice. I wandered around and decided on a barbequed seafood skewer and scampi which was so nice i had to follow it up with fish and chips and the whole lot only cost about 10 quid (which for Norway, land of the 5 quid beer, is very reasonable).
Following lunch I dragged my bloated stomach to the aquarium to check out the seals and penguins and then headed back to the hostel for an early night.
Next day I did the Norway in a Nutshell tour which takes you on a cool railway, dug into a mountain valley, on a 2hr fjord cruise and then in a bus back up the hill. I'd heard it was one of those 'must-do' tours, but found it a bit more the same of everything I'd seen. I think it would be great to do at the start of a Norwegian trip, but maybe not the end.

Anyway, I'd got in touch with Signe who lives in Aarhus, Denmark who I'd met in Stockholm and she'd invited me to come and visit, so next day I got on the ferry from bergen to Hantsholm....
