Where I stayed
We hung around the room in the morning while I participated in a conference call for work (no, it's never too far away), then decided to head into town for a tour of the art galleries. Keeping to our normal travel strategy, we went in search of our local art piece for this trip. We wound up with a very nice burlwood bowl carved from a piece of "Birdseye Yellow Cedar" - no pics, you'll have to visit to see it!
Tofino is an eclectic mix of transient surfers, local First Nations people, shopowners, and idle rich. Oh, and the whole tourist crowd, too - although tourism seems to be limited to a relatively small number of people. The energy commitment to get here is pretty significant, so there appears to be a natural limit on the tourist density. Anyhow, between the wetsuit-clad surfers riding their bicycles around, to the assortment of other folks, we spent a bunch of time commenting on the human scenery. By the way, it seems that many of the surviving microbuses from the 60's have found their way here...along with their aging hippie occupants. Just a whole lot of fun...
We indulged in the tasting menu here at the hotel to top off the day. The last time we were here, the chef put out an incredibly inspired culinary display, so we really looked forward to it. This time, however, it was a little disappointing - it seemed like the chef was trying to make a point about versatility, and the individual servings didn't really tie together as well as we would have hoped. Alas, there's the adventure part again...a little Riesling and a fire back in the room put all well with the world again...
Tomorrow looks like another clear day, but without the wind. We are planning to get up early to go tidepool exploring at low tide.
