Spent the weekend hiking in and around Chuncheon, which is famous for a spicy chicken dish cooked on your table; it is so good, Aaron and I had it for lunch, dinner and the following days lunch. There is a back alley in the market area about a hundred yards long with over forty spicy chicken restaurants - we selected the busiest ones figuring the locals know where to eat. The city has a couple of huge army bases (as
do all the northern cities and towns) and three hydro-electric dams have created a summer water playground in this area - there is a nice three to four kilometre walking path along the levee.
Used a local bus going southwest to Gangchon and hiked to the Gugok waterfall. Although frozen it was a glorious 10K return walk - it was entertaining watching the climbers scale the one hundred plus metre ice wall
My time in Korea is coming to an end :(. My next trip to Asia will likely encompass Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam - when is the issue (definitely not during the humid summer).
Tidbits:
- Just shove a moist bamboo pole into the ground and it will grow.
- Barber poles, especially the electric ones, are not quite what you may imagine when coming from North America -- unless, of course, you want a massage with extras.
- Green crosses and lights are for ambulances, hospitals and pharmacists.
- Koreans do things to the extreme and always have the best equipment, whether hiking, climbing, bicycling or playing sports.
- I'm still astounded at how cheap intercity travel is in Korea and how frequently it runs - $7.60 from Seoul to Chuncheon, every twenty minutes for the 150km.

. Korea, because of its large population and small size (relative to Canada), does not have much wilderness but they do have the most beautiful landscape created by the rugged small mountain ranges. My time in Korea is coming to an end :(.
