Bear Island campground

I spent the past weekend camping in my most favourite place in Florida - Bear Island in the Big Cypress National Preserve. This free campground in the wilderness is thirty-three kilometres north of the Tamiami Trail along the dusty, washboard Turner River Road. This is a great place to relax, hike and view wildlife once hunting season ends in early January (about 40 deer bit the dust ). Also got to test four-wheel drive due to mud created by the high water levels.

On arriving, we immediately espied a cute Armadillo plus several others over the weekend (I hadn't seen a wild one since visiting Merritt Island in 1972). Bird life is really exciting to watch here – also bats at night. Used our campfire to cook a steak, yams, mushrooms and squash one night just before the rain arrived. Also found out that I need to do more sealing to keep the house dry :(.

The locals here (got to renew acquaintences) had lots of complaints about the Law Enforcement Park Rangers harassment and attempt to evict them in an underhanded manner by giving ridiculous tickets to long term campers; they never seem to hassle hunters.

Did lots of short hikes around the area and even saw some small rabbits. It will still take some months for Bogie to get back into long-distance walks, especially with his backpack. Returned slowly to the Glade Hut by taking the Loop Road – extremely rough going but very pretty.

Assuming the weather improves soon, the next report will hopefully describe my ninety mile kayak trip from Everglades City to Flamingo via the beaches... Regards... TomB

RE: Bear Island

Hello Tom - have you had a chance to camp at Pink Jeep or Gator Pit yet?
