Hay River Territorial Campground

Flag of Canada  , Northwest Territories,
Monday, June 29, 2009

Took the road less traveled by heading up Highway 88 which is a "dirt road" from Red Earth Creek to Fort Vermilion, a distance of about three-hundred and fifty kilometres. The scenery was awesome -- lots of oil wells set in a beautiful rugged countryside with hundreds of bubbling streams but only two major rivers.

By lunchtime, rain and drizzle had set in... Took the obligatory pictures at the border to the NorthWest Territories then continued toward Hay River which has a Territorial campground. Since the tent had to be setup on a pad that was smaller than the tent, everything got a little wet as it rained nearly all night... The only real wildlife we've seen in NWT are swarms of Mosquitoes; at least the sandflies have yet to arrive (these are the Ontario Blackfly equivalent)...

Continuing on to Fort Smith today to prepare for a week or two assault on Wood Buffalo National Park. Will update you in a couple of weeks... Regards... TomB
