The local bus was pretty awful, new-ish but very cramped, especially with luggage and extra people. Slept a bit and the scenery was pretty impressive winding along mountain passes. At one point I woke up and the smallest woman I've ever seen was perched on top of my bag in the aisle (no more seats) being sick into a plastic bag. This lasted around 4 hours, though 'luckily' she moved onto the seat across from us when someone else got off. Nice. We were relieved to get into Dien Bien Phu at 6.30pm, a 12 hour journey as opposed to the 16 hours advertised.
It was still light when we arrived into Dien Bien Phu. We booked our tickets to Laos for the next day and checked into a cheap hostel opposite the bus station. Had a walk around the town, got some food, and headed back to bed by 8pm!
