05/09/2008 - L
We woke up and looked through the curtains, woo woo a beautiful clear blue sky so we knew that it was perfect for our helicopter trip! We got to the centre and took a van trip round to the helicopter site and saw two choppers. We were so lucky as we got in the big one and because i'm small we got to sit up front so had the best views ever. We set off and put our headphones on and headed towards the Fox Glacier, we went all the way up and circled at the top of the glacier. We could see Mount Tasman and some of Mount Cook which is the highest mountain in New Zealand. We then prepared to land at the top of Fox Glacier where we got out and walked around which was absolutely amazing and a totally crazy experience. The snow was really soft and we sunk right into it and I tryed to write my name but kept falling over! We were on the snow for almost 10 minutes before getting back into the helicopter; we took off and flew over loads of mountains, saw some recent avalanches before flying down over the Franz Josef Glacier. This was cool as we could see where we walked the previous day. The pilot told us we had to change helicopters so luckily we had extra flight time as we landed, switched, and took off again over the valley back to Fox. Awesome experience.
After this we drove to the Fox Glacier car park and set off on the Fox Glacier trail. Once again we could only get so far before there were ropes, but we jumped these and headed to the 'terminal' (glacier face) with some others. The front was huge, where the Fox River comes out of the glacier there was a big cave. After the walk we got back in the van and started the massive drive to Wanaka.... More thumbnails ...
