04/09/08 - L

An early rise again for a quick dip in the local Hokitika pool to basically have a hot shower again! Then we drove down to Franz Josef Glacier and went to the info centre to ask about the poor weather and possibility of a helicopter flight. The weather was supposed to clear up the next day so we headed to do the Glacier Valley Walk - but the guide in the centre had said that it was only 15 minutes instead of an hour because the rivers were high so people couldn't walk to the base of the glacier. When we got to the roped area and saw the glacier it was amazing but were gutted that we couldn't get closer so we crossed the ropes and were naughty!! We had to cross lots of rivers running from the glacier and got quite wet feet. It was a hard walk over lots of rocks but was really fun. We thought that we had better check what the helicopter flight people thought about the chances of going on a trip, they were really positive about the following morning so fingers crossed. We drove down to Fox Glacier and went to the lookout point and then booked onto the flight for the next day. A bit of a cold night but we were so excited about the next morning it didn't matter.
