L -15/05/08 until 21/05/08

The boat didn't leave until 8am so we had been sitting on the a moored boat for 14hours, Gabrel found out that there was a problem with the rotor and then the tide had gone out so we were wedged in the sand. The boat was pretty good it had abut 20 double cabins which I am so glad we paid extra for as the alternative option was a hammock. The boat was so crowded with people in hammocks, a lot of women with several children! Our cabin had a bunk bed in and we could lock it and had a key to the VIP toilets, this was not nice as it was a box with a shower and toilet next to each other. The water to wash with was brown as it was straight from the river so not very hygienic. Breakfast was at 6am (we only made this the first morn when we were still docked), lunch at 11am and tea at 5pm. Lunch and dinner were nice, rice, spagetti, beef steak or stew, some roasted chicken and salad. We had a better selection then the non VIP guests and had more room to eat as it was a crazy frenzy upstairs at food time. We met some really nice people and everyone was intrigued by the GRINGOS as of course we were the only english. The guy in the cabin next door was called Abreu and we got to no him quite well, there was a language barrier but Gabrel translated for us. He came from Sao Paulo and was going to live with the indigenous people for 4 years. Another guy was Marcus, he was very annoying as he didn't quite understand that when we said we can't understand he would carry on chatting for an hour. (I think he fancied Tom as he gave him his t-shirt!!) We got off the boat a few times along the way to stretch our legs, at one of the stops we had a few hours to wait so Tom and a few of the lads went for a swim but I decided against it as it didnt look very clean at all!! We saw lots of wildlife on our journey and we saw dolphins in several places in the river and near where they went swimming. We were travelling down the river at the end of the high season so there are many houses completely flooded. There can be up a 7m difference between the low and high season so the impact is enormous.
Unfortunately I got a bit ill the last 24hrs so they were hell!! We arrived on Wednesday morn at 2am but stayed on the boat until 6am when we came to our hostel. We then met a jungle trek guy who helped us book our 3 day jungle trek into the Amazon. Its going to be a slightly different birthday than normal...............
