! As we got lifted out of the underground by the esculator we got hit by that familiar feeling of humidity and heat and that smell of Asia which we have missed so much. Within a few moments we were wandering down a jam-packed market street with food vendors shouting orders and steam escaping from the side of their stalls. There were red lanterns everywhere, and I mean EVERYWHERE, in preparation for Chinese New Year, there was load music and shouting, the air smelt spicy and sweet, there was a red glow to the whole street from the lanterns, it was dark and sticky... in a word, it was fantastic! We both looked at each other and I could tell we were thinking the same thing: "Thank god we're back in Asia, I've missed it so much". We arrived at our hostel a few minutes later and, after checking-in, we both went straight to bed and slept like logs until the next morning.
After a long and exhausting flight yesterday from Cairns, we arrived in Singapore last night at about 9:30pm. We already had our hostel booked and knew where we had to go on the underground MRT system to get there, so it was a quick skip through immigration and customs and then we were off to buy our MRT tickets.Once we had our tickets it took us about 40 minutes to get to our final station; before we had even stepped off the train we were busy comparing Singapore to Hong Kong and listing all the ways it's different or similar. I know that it's not fair to compare two places but you can't really help but compare Singapore and Hong Kong because, on the surface, they are so similar... but as we have learnt over the last few days they are actually really different! Once we got to our stop we headed up to ground-level for our first taste of Singapore. We have decided to stay in the China Town section of Singapore mostly because this is where all the temples are that we want to see and its also where lots of the cheap food stalls are
