Day 2) Starting to think that this whole Southern Scenic Route was a bit of a scam to get you to spend money in the tiny towns along the way, we headed to our next stop of Invercargill. This is the most southernly city in New Zealand and had got quite a bad rap in our guidebook for being boring and cold... so we were feeling really cheery this morning! However, it just goes to show you should never judge a city by a guidebook, we absolutley loved it in Invercargill! We got into town and the sun was shining, there were dozens of really interesting alternative shops, lots of nice, friendly people (mostly with tons of tattoos) everywhere and best of all a sweet shop that sold Jolly Ranchers!!!! After a quick walk around town we drove to a town called Bluff which is the most southern point in the country and the main ferry point to Stewart Island (a small island owned by New Zealand and mostly used as a nature reserve). The only reason we wanted to go to Bluff was to have our photo taken with the signpost which directs you to the next country to the south of New Zealand.... the Antatartic! Next stop.... the South Pole! So we drove to Stirling Point in Bluff and had our photo taken and spent some time gawping at the huge waves which were coming in and imagining that water coming all the way from the South Pole. We also saw two vehicles reverse into each other in the car park and heard the massive crunch when they crashed into the back of each other, one of the drivers even came and asked us whose fault we thought the crash was (there's no such thing as compulsory car insurance in NZ so you have fight it out as to whose fault it was and who is going to pay for the repairs). We kindly told him that we were sorry for his accident but there was no way we were getting involved!
