Its amazing what a good nights sleep can do to lift your mood! We both woke up this morning feeling much better than we did yesterday and looking forward to the day ahead. We headed off this morning to our next destination, the Coromandel Peninsula on the north east of the island. The drive was fanatastic, lovely sunny weather and some of the best scenery! It wasn't so great for Tom though who was driving because the roads were very windy and it was a difficult 3 hour drive through the mountains and forests. We were heading to the Coromandel so we could visit a place called Cathedral Cove and the Hot Water Beach. We drove a little further north than we needed to so we could visit the main town in this area and get some more info at the Tourist Information Centre. While we were there we visited the local supermarket. In New Zealand there are 2 main supermarkets, New World and Countdown. The owner of the campsite we had stayed at the night before had told us to keep going to Countdowns if possible because they were cheaper, but in this town there was only a New World so we were forced to go there instead. Blinking heck it was expensive!! We only bought bread, stock cubes and biscuits and it cost $17, which is about 8.50! I practically had to carry Tom through the car park!! I think we'll try and stock up at cheaper places when we get chance from now on! After our very pricey encounter with the supermarket we headed to a campsite near the beach. The campsite is lovely but, as seems to be happening quite a lot, we are the only people here!
One of the main reasons for coming to this area was to go to the Hot Water Beach, where you can dig youself a hole in the sand and it will fill with hot water from the ground below like a bathtub. So we hired some spades from reception and drove to the beach. When we got there we could see a group of people in the distance along the shore and lots of steam rising from the sand, so we knew we were in the right place! We walked along the beach and saw that someone was boiling eggs in a small hole in the ground, so we started digging near everyone else but all we were getting was cold water!! A couple of people had clearly dug holes earlier in the day and then left them, so as we went to have a look around, a couple sitting in one hole pointed to an empty hole nearby. "We dug that one but its too hot for us, you can have it if you want." By this point we were getting really chilly and didn't really believe that it could be that hot, so we steped into the water at the bottom on the hole. Wow!! We should have believed them, it was boiling hot! We dug around the hole to let some cold water in, but it didn't make any difference, the water just got hotter and hotter. It was hotter than having a bath at home and if you moved your feet and disturbed the water then more hot water seaped up through the sand. Looking across the beach at everyone sitting in their own little bathtubs right next to the waves (which were huge at this beach) it was a very surreal moment. Some people had even brought cooler boxes filled with beer and families had built themselves huge holes to fit everyone in: kids, babies, grandparents! We had a giggle watching everyone climb out of their holes, they looked like bright red lobsters climbing out of a cooking pot! We stayed in the water for about an hour and then decided to head off, the water was hot hot hot and the temperature was just rising more everytime we moved. Even we were very red by the time we got out, especially our feet which looked like lobsters feet!! We got back to the campsite and settled in for the night. Next stop Cathedral Cove and then we are on to Rotorua.
