We were sad to leave India after 10 amazing weeks - the people, the culture, the lifestyle, the food, the animals, the driving, the chai... everything about it was fantastically 'Indian'! We'll definitely never forget our time there and the other countries we visit have a lot to live up to - the standard has been set!! Sri Lanka was also really nice and Nepal was stunning but, just like the Littlest Hobo we just keep moving on and the next stop for Tom 'n' Charlie's fun bus after India takes us to Thailand.

We arrived in Bangkok and within 10 minutes we'd already seen more Westerners than in the past 10 weeks! Charlie was sad about losing her 'celebrity status' once more but this was soon rectified on our first full day there when 3 separate people (including 1 girl) took pictures of her on their camera phones.

It feels like I'm going out with a faded, semi-famous, possibly one-hit wonder pop star - now I know how Gina G's boyfriend feels!!

The hotel we'd booked as part of our trip was super posh: the room had a fridge, clean bed sheets, air-conditioning and no 'guests' crawling around the bathroom floor... luxury indeed! We also got the opportunity to stuff our faces at the buffet breakfast and spot fellow travelers also looking lost and feeling out of place amongst the 'elite' diners! A far cry from our usual Indian breakfasts: sat in a small café eating egg curry and chapatti with our hands whilst all around us rickshaw drivers, street vendors and beggars slopped, slapped and hacked down their food! After checking out of 'the Ritz' we've been staying in Bangkok with Charlie's friend Pip who lives out here.
Blessing! This has given us plenty of opportunity to wind-down after India and sit by their pool enjoying the Thai 'winter' sun (30 degrees plus every day!).

One evening here we decided to take in some Muaythai, or Thai boxing to you and me. Inside the cowshed-like stadium we watched 8 bouts of kicking, elbowing and headlocks - think of a Saturday night at Yates set to the sound of repetitive ding-ding Thai music and over-excited punters 'wahey-ing' every blow and you're almost there!! Some of the fights were a bit tame and cagey, whereas a couple ended in pretty brutal knockouts - where wheelchairs were needed!. The final event saw two fighters who couldn't have been much older than 12 take to the ring. By now the main event had finished and half the crowd had left but they missed a treat as the two kids proceeded to kick the crap out of each other!

The following day I found out that I'd become an uncle again (welcome to the world Gracie Emma!) so, in time-honoured fashion we went out for the wetting of the baby's head down the Khao San Road... and wet it we did! A night of cocktail buckets (VERY strong cocktails served in brightly-coloured buckets like you get at the seaside with a little wooden spade) and a spot of flower-munching later we felt our duty as Uncle and Aunt had been fulfilled! Later in the week we found some 'Uncle Tom' vodka in one of the shops here so again some head-wetting was required...

We couldn't come to Bangkok without seeing some of the culture it has to offer, some of the famous sights and attractions that make this city, indeed this country so famous... so on Saturday night after a few Uncle Tom's we went to the Ping-Pong show! Obviously we can't go into too much detail here but we'll give you a list of words and the rest is down to you to work out:

a banana
beer bottles and no opener
a seemingly-never-ending garland fitted with 3-inch nails (think of a magician's sleeve!)
a mini trumpet
lemonade into coke ala Jesus' water into wine (Tom's personal favourite!)
a balloon and 3 darts
smoking a cigarette
marker pen messages - look, no hands!
... and of course some ping-pong balls!

Not content with our cultural learnings at 'Ping Pong' we also had a very enjoyable evening of people-watching last night in Nana: a popular 'pick-up point' for D.O.M.'s (Dirty Old Men)! Ladyboys, midgets and a streetful of slobbering, overweight Star Trek fans all coming together... you can't buy entertainment like it!
