Rebecca:
Hellooooooooooooooo!!! ... and thanks a lot for that great goodbye party last fornight's Saturday! Thank you for the salads you brought, the thoughtful presents you made and above all for the great time we had together. So, what has happened in the last 95 days? Thomas finally finished his master thesis. It had become a major pressure for both of us, keeping him at the desk most of the time and leaving correction and travel / party planning to myself - along with the job, that is. Friday, 31.08.07, Thomas had his oral exams in Bochum while I was giving a little farewell party in the office (thanks for that farewell to my colleagues again!). That night, we met some friends for a good night out in Essen dowtown and got quite drunk, what a Happy Day! The following week, Thomas still had to write his last assignment though things got much better compared to the master thesis days. So, we were able to organise the party together ... Saturday was the big farewell day and we enjoyed every minute of it. Sooooooooo many friends were there and we had such a good time. Against my expectations I didn't have to cry hugging so many people farewell. Yet, I was both happy and sad at the same time: it feels great to be finally doing what I've dreamt of for more than 10 years, on the other hand, it was so wonderful having most beloved ones together in one room that I didn't want that moment to go away either. Check out the party pictures Thomas uploaded!
Withe the party over, we could finally tackle the trip issues of which there were more than a few: travel agent visit, yellow fever vaccination, gadget and comsetics shopping and so on. While Thomas was in Coventry for his oral exams, I prepared everything for my move on Saturday. Thanks to the helpers again! Jochen's 16 boxes were just enough for my stuff which, along with the few furnitures, fit into a surprisingly small space in my parent's cellar. My sister keeps a lot of our furniture until (and maybe after) she moves into the cute appartment she bought last week. Congratulations, Miriam! In any case, the whole thing was done in little more than half a day so that in the afternoon, we were all enjoying the sunshine in my parent's garden before we set up the barbecue.
Sunday, I sold my car. Not bad, I'd say, closing all major issues within one weekend. It was strange selling the car I've been driving for so many years, not to mention the appartment Miriam and I have been sharing for so long. The latter is worse for me (of course!) as I will miss her a lot, and I must say I still haven't realized properly that I no longer live with her in the Virgiliastrasse. My room is empty and so is my side of the sink, that's a strange feeling of beeing uprooted. Believe it or not I'm only now realizing that in a few days, the trip will start. Tomorrow, I will start packing. I better become excited.
A lot of people ask me what country I'm most looking forward to. That's hard to say, but through my friendship with Maria, I built up strong emotions for Ecuador which will surely become a highlight of the trip, especially with the prospect of meeting her family. Yet, we will be building emotional links with most places we visit, so I am convinced most of the trip will be great. The long overland route from Bangkok to Bombay will be cool. But in the end, it's the whole concept that attracts me and not one single place in particular. And, as Jeanette pointed out, it will be the highs and the lows we'll still be talking about in a few years. I'm looking forward to all of them.
So, lock the doors, fasten your seatbelts and get ready for takeoff! Next time you'll hear from us, we'll already be sweating in Peru. Thomas: Hello again! Well, I have to say the last weeks were busy like hell; though it was great to be back in Germany. In August, I was working more than full-time on my Master Thesis but there was still time to meet friends I had'nt met for more than a half year. I remember one of this typical days in Heiligenhaus, the only thing what was planned was that Basti, Torben and me do something together. So we met first in the supermarket to by some booze and we left with a 5 litre can of Pils and a bottle Habana Club, glasses and crisps. Because it was a warm evening, we decided to start for a drinking tour by foot stopping at several benches till we arrived at the crop fields which is really not a long way. But we met some people on the way so it took us maybe 2 or 3 hours.
Beside this evening, there were more evening where we went to the pub and chatted about our lives and former times. At the end of August, the pressure to finish the thesis increased and the nights were longer and the rings under my eyes grew. The last night before I submitted in Germany I did not sleep a minute. But studies were not finished, yet. After my (very good!) presentation of my work at my German Uni, I had to sit behind my desk again to do my final piece of work for my Masters. This was already prepared quite good (the team work was great for this assignment; thx George, Mirek, Dai) so it was not such a nightmare as the Master thesis.
Finishing - still just almost finishing - my studies had to be celebrated by the farewell party Rebecca mentioned. Well, thanks for coming and making it a good party. Each of you will be in good memory for the next year. I cannot describe it in words, I was that happy to see so many of you who I have partly not seen for the last year and I won't see during the next. I had to make a best-of choice from the numerous pictures, if anybody is interested in the complete collection, just let me know. Last week, I really finished my part then for my Masters at Coventry University when I submitted the huge document (184p., okay to be honest it's twospacing). George was of great help printing it and canceling a few minor errors. This took one of only two days of my stay in UK. And next day, my vocal exam was scheduled which I prepared while packing my things the next morning. But every busy time come to an end, after the ('well-done') presentation and some difficult questioning the professors and study mates led me to a pub and after three pints and many good wishes and hugs and goodbyes I was back on my plane to Germany. Of course, this weekend I was only celebrating, relaxing and meeting friends. Sunday evening, while I chatted at tea time with my cousin and his wife about the world trip I finally realised how soon we start for the Big Trip. Jesus! So, I worked out a ToDo and Done list in the night which does not let me be too lazy this week. Yesterday, my cousin and his wife met both of us because they were inspired by our plans to do probably such a trip next year. Next time, we are writing you can expect more exotic experiences, peculiar stories about people, nature or happenings. Well, this week I really get excited about that whole thing.
