We checked out of Surfers pretty quick, wanting to get away from the high rises. We took a two hour ride down to Byron Bay, and arrived here at 3 after leaving at 2. Seeing as we were not traveling east or west, we found this strange, only to find out that New South Wales follows Daylight Savings Time, while Queensland doesn't. An hour of life, gone. But at least the sun stays out later, sort of.
We pitched the tent, and headed to town, looking for Guinness, and a black velvet for my lady. We found the Guinness, but not a competent bartender, at a place by the beach and set up at a table, figuring the spot by the beach would be a good spot our new friends who were supposed to meet us down here. Which, as it turns out, it was. They came off the beach, we grabbed them and had a few before they had to head back north to their swanky hotel. Great people, and we had great conversation with them both the night before and that day. Seth is going to be dancing his ass off for the next five days and the Blues fest here in Byron, and I have to say both of us are a bit jealous. G-Love is playing down here, and I would love to see him down under. Alas, it is not in the cards for us.
After our goodbyes we spent the rest of the night drinking $6 pints of Guinness, which in OZ is a great price, at a local Irish pub. They had some good Irish music going, some guy taking the piss out of a jig, and even a real Irishmen got up to sing a few tunes. We sat next to a few Irish lasses who seemed to be missing home a bit, considering the day.
We walked back to our site, and were invited to a round of "circle of death", some drinking game they were playing at the community table, and we skirted the chance for a walk on the beach. It was a lovely night, the 3/4 moon shining through broken clouds. We sat on the beach admiring the Pacific, how long we have been at its edges. Our entire trip, plus two years in LA. I do love this Ocean. Soon we leave it for the interior of OZ, and I am not sure when next we will see it. But no matter, adventure still lies ahead..
