On August 1 we headed off to Ofu and Olesaga, two small islands that lie 80 miles east of Tutuila, the main island of America Samoa. It was supposed to be a 5 day excursion, to celebrate our 6th anniversary. The day we arrived we sat down for what Marge, the owner of the Vaoto Lodge, where we were staying, called a turkey and cheese sandwich, after we got off the airplane. It turned out to be cheese on white bread, not that I am complaining, we were on Ofu. Straight after lunch we headed for a walk down the beach from the lodge. Immediately you run into loads of large black rocks.
The five dogs that were to become our companions all came along. Angel, 5 years old and the matriarch, Sandy and Horace,
whom are her puppies, now 3 years old, were able to walk along the rocks with us, while Max, a large Chihuahua mix, and Cheese, the gremlin dog from Tutuila whom had a bad tick bite infection and has limited mobility in his hind legs, were not so savvy.
We walked all the way till we came around a bend and there is the beach you dream of while laying in bed late at night. In all the time I spent just sitting on this beach and looking out I thought to myself, "For six years I have been dreaming of Samoa, and this is exactly what I was waiting for." I resolved to come back the next morning for sunrise photos.
After a while we walked back up to the road for the walk back, dogs at our ankles, shooting in and out of the bush. Dinner was being prepared while we walked around on the runway that was just out front of the Vaoto Lodge. We came in, ate, grabbed a beer, and Jim, Marge's son, invited us out to the beach to look at the stars, and we obliged. Wow! Im not sure how else to put it. It truly is beyond words. Ofu has about 6 street lights, while Olesaga has 5. They dont seem to cause much disturbance in star viewing. We sat, completely floored by how many stars were up there. Every few minutes someone would say, "See that one?!?" or "Oooh." refering to all the shooting stars. Jim told us about the constellation that he made up called the turtle, but I couldn''t see it, although I think Amanda did. Around 9 or so, the moon rose right over Olesaga. It had been so completely dark, and our eyes so adjusted from star gazing for hours, that once the moon rose, as about a three quarter moon, it gave us plenty of light to see. It was a perfectly enchanting evening. I was in love. And Amanda and I were having a great time too!!
