Luckily I managed to persuade Sarah not to launch an immediate Bigfoot expedition and continue with out road trip. We found a great little spa in santa cruz where you can get a private hot tub for just $10 an hour! It was very relaxing after a hard days driving / navigating/snoozing
We spent the night in Santa Cruz, which is a bit of a bohemian town (so had a good veggie restaurant) and headed for the coastal drive down 'Big Sur' the next day. It is a really spectacular drive - probably the most beautiful scenery we have seen on the trip so far. We caught a lovely sunset before finding a motel for the evening. After dark we headed out to get something to eat. Driving down the highway Sarah had to dip her lights for a passing car. when she put the full beam back on we were confronted by an extremely cute raccoon staring at us and twitching his little nose and then... SPLAT! The vegetarian became an animal killer and poor Bert raccoon was squashed into the tarmac, god rest his soul. I had better move on now as Sarah still doesn't like to think about him...
The next day we went to see 'Nitt Witt ridge' - an amazing house built from junk and salvaged materials. The guy who built it (starting in the 1920s and finishing in the mid 70s) also lived in it until 1989 (he is now dead) and it is in surprisingly good condition considering it is made out of beer cans, toilet seats, shells and tyres.
We spent last night in Santa Barbara - a lovely seaside town with a nice beach. We could tell we were close to Hollywood as we saw a celebrity queuing to see Borat at Santa Barbara cinema. We had too do a double take but amazingly it really was Ben Fogle!! We were too star struck to ask for a photo but if Hollywood can top that we will be surprised.
