Where I stayed
The Retreat by Ziri
Goa is unlike the rest of India, it is made for tourists. It is well groomed, has good service and the streets are clean. Goa is by far not the real India but it is a great place to stay in a 5* hotel, relax and eat some Indian cuisine. We were only supposed to be in Goa for a 3 day break but as it was so relaxed (and a great bargain!) we decided to extend to 12 days.
We found a 5* hotel on a half price offer for the duration of our stay. Unfortunately, it was a little out the way, with only a few restaurants within 3km. The food was ridiculously overpriced in the hotel, not just by our budget traveller standards, the restaurants were empty even the domestic tourists didn’t eat there. Every night we walked to a restaurant called Joescons, top rated in the area and gorgeous food
The hotel break was great, very relaxing and stress free but not exactly weather perfect. For 12 days we had one day of sun and eleven days of torrential rain. The second monsoon had arrived. We were lucky we extended our stay in Goa as Mumbai was flooded, with cars flowing down the streets!!
Next stop was Udaipur and on the day of departure we were still on the waiting list for the 24 hour train to Ahmadabad. We spent the next two hours trying to find a way to Udaipur or fly home early. As we couldn’t get a refund on our flights home we opted to fly to Mumbai and get an overnight bus to Udaipur. Tamil Nadu is the worst state we have encountered and Mumbai made it look like the Garden of Eden! If you can’t avoid this place then get in and out as quick as possible, we were there for 3 hours and we had seen enough already.
