Hi all,

We arrived in Sri Lanka during the low season so we quite limited where we could go because of the monsoons. During July and August we were recommended to head to the Hill Country and East Coast so we decided to spend a few days in Arugam Bay and Ella.

Unfortunately Sri Lanka’s transport system is one of the worst we have encountered. From Colombo it is an 8 hour journey to Arugam Bay on a rusty, mobile prison (aka bus). From 10pm to 6am we sat squashed on a tiny seat, made for 2 very small people listening to Indian music on full blast to keep the driver awake. It truly was the journey from hell and worst journey with have encountered over the year.

Arugam Bay is regarded as the best surf spot in the country and the world in fact so we headed there for a bit of sun, sea and sand. The village is tiny, still recovering from the 2004 tsunami which hit here first. However, the village received the least help when rebuilding, but along a small strip guest houses and hammocks have rebuilt and gain back popularity, mainly due to foreign investment. Unfortunately, as this is still a fisherman’s village rather than a tourist spot, you receive quite a lot of staring from the locals, one ediot on a motorbike even stuck his middle finger up at us, nice. Luckily, we had chosen to stay at Gecko’s, a gorgeous guesthouse that is set back from the beach so Hollie could sunbathe without the unwanted attention.

Love Hollie and Thomas x x x x

Travellers Tip:
If you make a holiday to Sri Lanka we highly recommend hiring a driver so you can be transported around without having to worry about getting on the terrible local transport. Most guesthouses and hotels also have rooms for your driver to stay in, otherwise they normally sleep in the car.
