Flag of New Zealand  , South Island,
Saturday, January 8, 2011

Hi all,

Recently ranked as the world's most beautiful place, the Milford Sound is a must-do for those visiting the South Island. We got the Milford Explorer that departs Queenstown very early in the morning. We stopped at the quaint township of Te Anua and had the BEST venison pie ever. Hollie has been dreaming about it ever since and since you've all gathered she loves her food, they are just that good! We departed Te Anua for Milford and once there we got on a two boat cruise through the sound exploring the peaks, waterfalls, sheer rocky cliffs and NZ's best nature including the Mirror Lakes. Coming to New Zealand and missing out on Milford Sound is like going to Egypt and not seeing the Pyramids.

Milford Sound receives about half a million visitors each year. Some arrive by foot via the Milford Track but the majority arrive by the bus load that pull into the canarf wharf. Milford Track is a 53.3km walk, described as one of the finest in the world. The number of walkers is limited in the Great Walks season. During that period you must follow a one-way, four day set itinerary. There are two ways to do the walk. Firstly, is the backpacker way, where your accommodation is in huts, as camping isn't allowed. You carry and cook all your own food and equipment. Oh and for 4 days there are no showers. All for about $400. The second way is the 5* way. You are on a 5 day guided walk which includes everything from packs to snacks, which you don't have to carry as a helicopter carries it to the next destination. The accommodation is much flashier, with showers and a 3+ course meal each night, all ending with a celebratory dinner on your last stay at Mitre Peak Lodge. More my kind of trek, but with the added price of $2000. Yep!!

Love Hollie and Thomas x x x

P.S If you are ever here please please go to Miles Better Pies. They are simply amazing.
