From Auckland, the Kiwibus made a few stops on our way to Whitianga (pronounced Fit-e-ung-a). The first stop was Cathedral Cove, along the Coromandel Peninsula which is renowned for its secluded beaches and untouched native forest. It was a 45 minute walk through the native forest to reach the 'white sand, crystal clear water and magnificent archway.' Unfortunately it was still raining so the beach at Cathedral Cove was not so stunning as anticipated and rather sombre.

Our next stop was Hot Water Beach which is located just above a thermal outlet. The tide was just right so that we could dig our own personal hot pool in the sand and wait for it to fill with hot water as the beach is above a tectonic plate. At times the water is too hot to even stand on, very surreal. From here we reached our final stop, Whitianga, for an overnight stop at Turtle Cove, which is one of the nicest hostels we have stayed in so far. However, the town is very small so we spent the night getting to know our fellow travellers on the Kiwi Bus.
