Hey everyone,

After Rio we made the short 4 hour journey to Paraty and were hoping for some better weather (none of this cloud rubbish). Paraty is set amid jutting peninsulas and stunning secluded beaches, with a backdrop of steep, jungled mountains plunging into an island studded bay. According to the reviews, Paraty is Brazil's most appealing and exquisitely preserved historical gems. The colonial centre is remarkable not only for its centuries old architecture, but also for its cobblestone streets that are closed off to any traffic, making it a delightful place to stroll about. Pararty is a the cosmopolitan and cultural centre of southern Brazil but comes across as a small quaint fishing village that is enhanced with high end galleries, shops and restaurants with world-class chefs, both Brazilian and foreign, meaning the seafood is sublime....oh and the lime monkey that Tom found that was in the trees in the plaza. We definitely understand why people decide to settle here as it is a beautiful place. As well the historical centre being an attraction the dozen of pristine beaches are within an hour of Paraty. This is the main reason we were here. Paraty holds many events and as we arrived we learnt that the annual gastro food festival was on which brings the top 30 chefs from around Brazil to cook in selected restaurants, and as we left the Latin Samba Dance Festival, Brazil's answer to Strictly Come Dancing, was due to start which Hollie was a little gutted to miss.

On our first day we made the trip to Trindade. Trindade is a long sweep of gorgeous coastline and four amazing beaches which are regarded as the most beautiful in Brazil. Trindade is the location where the Portaguese pirates made slaves carry the gold found in the waterfalls 20 miles back to Paraty. The beaches contain enormous boulders, white sand, trails leading the dense jungle and natural springs. We spent the day hre but as it was a weekend it was very busy with locals. This was so far the most beautiful beach we have visited....until Praia de Sono!

The next day we visited Praia de Sono and this is the most stunning beach we have ever ever ever seen. We caught a bus to Laranjeires and then from here we took an hour's trek through the jungle to reach the beach, which was completely deserted. For the whole day we had a total paradise beach all to ourselves. This place is unspoilt, no shacks, no vendors, restaurants or plastic table and chairs...or people! Just the crystal clear sea, white sand and the amazing back-drop of the lush green jungle and mountains. To top it all, the weather was the best we have had so far in Brazil; actually South America, not a cloud in the sky, 35 degrees and the sand was so hot you couldn't walk on it. It was amazing. The beach has remained unspoilt as it is not mentioned in many of the guidebooks. We only found out about this beach from the owner of the hotel we were staying at. It is a nice feeling travelling to remote, unspoilt places that hardly any travellers or tourists visit, this is what travelling must have been like 20 years ago. So Paraty and the surrounded islands is a highly recommended potential holiday spot.....but don't tell anyone!

Lots of Love,

Hollie and Thomas x x x
