San Juan is on the Pacific coast and is highly recommended by the travel guides as a holiday spot and surfers paradise. Surfers paradise it may be - but a holiday destination it is not. San Juan del Sur is apparently a quintessential Nicaraguan fishing town: low-key and unhurried, yet sparkling with life and the beaches are supposed to be stunning but we left not convinced.

Again, due to the recent heavy rainfall and storms across the country getting to the beach Manderas was not possible, as the sea was too dangerous so trips were being cancelled. Our hotel recommended a beach further along the coast. As Hollie planned to fill her time sunbathing and eating, she asked if there were restaurants and bars here. The reply was "Yes, Yes...lots!!" Oh how we were fooled! We took a 30 minute ride south of San Juan, which broke down half way, across an obstacle course of a road! I think road is an overstatement as this rocky mud track was only possible with a 4WD. The river had broken its banks and we continued our treacherous journey through the overflowing river. Tom did point out the journey itself was worth the $5. But unfortunately the "beach" was not. This awful piece of silt was full of rubble, driftwood and washed up rubbish. Sunbathing on a stunning sandy beach....not quite! And for the many bars and measly food shack that served a chicken burger or fish tacos! I suppose the upside being we only had to wait 4 hours to be picked back up again!! Luckily, Tom had hired a boogie board so he appreciated the waves.

The highlight of San Juan was definitely the food. The seafood kebab and mixed meat burrito were simply stunning and worth the visit.

Really? I lived outside of SJDS and after some years I realized that it just sucked on so many levels that i had to get control and leave. Why on earth would anyone go there apart from cocaine and cheap hookers? I moved there for other reasons than a Beach home... and was glad to leave. Screw that festering pit of a town and the expats who love it so much. a shithole is a shithole....
