Merida is the capital of the Yucatan and was very nice. We stayed at Nomadas Hostel which was perfect as it had a pool to chill out in
As we arrived on a Sunday the Zocalo was really busy and buzzing for both locals and tourists that had flooded in to see the free entertainment and eat at the food stalls that surrounded the square where we eat tacos for 5 pesos!! At the really nice local theatre there was a break-dancing competition for free. I have to say that this is definitely an initiative that should be in England, every weekend and during the week the Merida council allows local youth groups to perform, free ballet recitals, free cinema showings and lots more. We sat and watched the breakdancing (which was of very high quality) for at least an hour and it was packed full of youngsters and family's that had been pulled in from the streets, it was a great scheme. This is the sort of thing we need to do in the UK, it would get so many kids off the streets, get them interested and stop them from getting bored and committing crime. If Mexico can do it then why can't we?!?!?!?!
We then walked around the Zocalo, grabbed a huge Oreo ice-cream and made our way back to the hostel to swim in the pool. That evening Martin and Laura kindly offered to cook for us which was really nice, it made a real chnage not to eat out. They again inspired us so the next day we made our way to Walmart and got some ingredients so we could cook our own dinner.....definitely been missing eating pasta! That evening we went out with drinks with Martin and Laura to a local Mayan bar where we had lots of cocktails.
