No tours today so got a chance to sleep in a bit before catching the ferry out to Russell, the first capital of New Zealand. It was a sleepy little village just across the bay from us and was meant to have a nice beach on the other side. So off we went but the weather was against us so we chilled out on a bench by the beach and tried to plan all the buses for our time in NZ. The cold wind got the better of us though and we hurried back for a hot chocolate before catching the ferry back to Paihia.
We planned to do some walks and test out my new shoes this afternoon and so we set off on what was billed as a five hour walk, but these walks never normally take as long as the guidebook says...Oh how wrong we were. We were trekking up hills all day, there hardly ever seemed to be a down bit. It was dam hard work. By some miraculous chance when we finally got to a road there happened to be a car there checking out the end of our walk.
Our coastal walk home wasn't as hard as the previous walk but was still tough with a couple of slippery slopes and dodging round recent landslips! When we finally got home we were knackered. Managed to somehow cook dinner before passing out.

Our marathon walk
And they even offered us a lift to the start of our coastal walk. We've never been so relieved! The funny thing was, as Jules was telling them how we were off travelling for 6 months round the world, we found out that all 4 of them were sailors and were sailing round the world themselves. One of them had been away for 12 years!!Our coastal walk home wasn't as hard as the previous walk but was still tough with a couple of slippery slopes and dodging round recent landslips!
