Dad and I have just been on a two day mission to Quito. We have a spinnaker coming from Miami that has been locked in Quito because customs didn't believe the daclared value of the sail and were asking for a total of $1,600 for import tax and fines for a $2,500 sail!!!
The only way for us to avoid paying the outrageous fees were to go up to Quito and meet with customs to confirm the value. So we set off from the local town of La Libertad at 9.30 pm and took an overnight bus, arriving on our shipping agent's door in Quito 12 hours later! Mission!
Fortunately, after very little sleep, we were able to convince customs that the sail was the corect value and they agreed to release it to the shipping company, who will deliver it to the boat early next week
After the good news, Dad and I took the rest of the day to have a look round Quito and do a bit of shopping (locally made shirts etc. are so cheap!). We went to see the city's cathederal and climbed to the highest point (up many dodgy ladders that would have been torn down in Europe!) to get some great shots of the city.
We were then taken on a tour of the city in the evening by our shipping agent and her boss and then out for dinner - top notch nosh! The next morning we got on a flight back to Guayaquil (45 mins rather than 10 hours by bus!) and got back to the boat last night.
All in all a swift and succesful mission.
Adios,
Tom xx

Another day at the mill?
Sounds like you are having altogether too much fun to me although I don't suppose ten hours on that bus would be on anybodys list of 'things to do before I die.' Still, wish I was there!!! Love, mum
A long way to go for a shopping trip!
Hey you, didn't take you long to head for the shops! Sounds like you're definitely making the most of things and having a great time. Loving the updates, and keep the photos coming. Things good with me - will remember your 10 hour bus journey next time I'm delayed on a train bound for London - though not sure I'd mind if it was on its way to Quito! Love Nikki x
