Arrived on Gili Trawangan after a long journey (12h) by bus, ferry, bus and boat at 18h. Met some really nice guys from Hanover on the ferry who've been travelling for about a year now (Hi Andreas & Annette). On the transfer bus from the ferry to the boat I also met Chris, a guy from Wales with whom I've gone looking for a room, since they were supposed to be sold out. Not the case though. Got a room now for 90.000rp which is ok - no sink though, but since the water is not usable it doesn't matter anyhow. Went straight to the Blue Marlin Dive Center afterwards and signed up for the rest of my dive course. Then had some cocktails and crashed out fairly late. Need to be in the pool at 10:30h....

Did my first dive today!!! Awesome. Crystal clear water, big fishes, an old pier wreck and loads of fabulous looking corals in all colours and shapes. After the first pool session they took us out with the boat across to the coast of Gili Meno for the first dive at 12m. Can't wait to get my camera underwater to take some shots. Diving was really easy and real fun.
Tomorrow we'll have another pool session and then another sea dive most probably at sunset point.

Overslept after partying to long :)
Should've been in the pool for the next confined water session at 9am. But it was ok. Went out to dive at Sunset reef and saw two sea turtles and a black tip shark!! Very impressive. Tomorrow on the last dive (doing two tomorrow) I can finally try out the underwater case for my camera. That'll be really cool. The other participants of the dive school wanted to hire a guy with an underwater camera for 1.000.000rp. This will be a lot cheaper.
Other than that I slept most of the rest of the day because after the dive I was feeling a bit sick. Guess the food in the warung where the locals eat wasn't something for my stomach, or I just had too much to drink with the canadians yesterday. But feeling better now :)
Need to be in the pool at 8:30h tomorrow morning so I'll go to bed really early today...

I'm now certified PADI Open Water Diver! Did 2 more dives today and saw lots of sea turtles and other fancy fish. Took my camera down to 20m and took some great pictures of the team and corals. Tomorrow I booked a dive to sharks point to hopefully see lots of sharks and some sea snakes (the most poisonous creature on earth). Will upload photos tomorrow...

Did my first dive without instructor at Sharks-Point reef. Saw cuttlefish, little nemos and a big white-tip shark. Unfortunately the shark was gone as fast as it came :(
Tonight's the big Blue Marlin party so I do a dive tomorrow afternoon at Sunset-Reef, where I saw my first shark :)
The other's in the boat saw some sharks too and one did a great video. Well, will get one on camera sooner or later :)
Starting to plan to go to Komodo and Flores before I meet up with Matze and Colt in Makassar in 2 1/2 weeks. The trip to Flores on a sailing boat where you live-aboard, should take around 4-5 days. You stop at all the islands and go diving and/or snorkeling. During the whole trip you can do some fishing, etc. and hopefully get to see the Komodo-warans on Komodo. Then the ferry from Flores (Laguanton) to Sulawesi (Makassar) will take another 2 days. So I'll have to leave Gili T at the latest next sunday, maybe even earlier.
So, enjoy the pictures for now....

Bought a dive watch (computer) which makes me feel a lot safer than trusting the dive guides. Not that they don't look after you, but you never know how it is at other locations. Went diving at the Bounty wreck and saw a huge hawkbill sea turtle and filmed a swimming greenback sea turtle. Will upload the video as soon as I have cut it.
Booked the sailing trip to Komodo and Flores which will include food & drink, accomodation on board, snorkeling, fishing, etc.
I will start on Monday 19th so I will have plenty of time afterwards to get to Makassar/Sulawesi to meet up with the others. Tomorrow I will do the Adventure Diver at Sharks-Point Reef to 30m where I should get some sharks in front of the camera...

Ok got sharks, turtles, sea snakes, sting-rays on video and photo. Unfortunately I couldn't get the camera out fast enough for the eagle-ray...really great and fantastic though - big like a manta ray.
Decided to go on Nitrox doing the deep dive to stay down a little longer.

After the dive yesterday I decided to do the Nitrox Enriched Air Certification. And did it within 6h hardcore learning passing with 100%!
Tomorrow I'll do two more dives and complete my Advanced Open Water Diver taking photography as the speciality.
Tried to upload the videos, but 20mb is just to slow uploading from here. Will have to shrink them even further and upload them tomorrow ... stay tuned!

Absolved my last two dives and can now proudly call myself Advanced Open Water Diver and  Enriched Air (Nitrox) Diver :)
Saw another really big shark, but didn't have my camera along. On the morning dive water got into the underwater case, but luckily I noticed and nothing happened. Had to wash out the case with fresh water though and leave it to dry.
I will enjoy the last couple of days with partying at Rudy's tonight and to explore the island.

Explored the island a little bit. Went half round the coast and then cut across right through the center. I came along all the local housing and noticed a place where they open the coconuts, leave the flesh to dry and rasp them to make curry for instance. They burn the coconut shells to make charcoal which they use for their grills to make the satays or fish.

Walked round the island again and took some pictures of the things I saw yesterday. Found a coconut and brought it back to my room. Got it out of its casing with the Leatherman tool - Oliver thanks again, it's really cool! Drank the juice and ate about half of it - yum.
Will leave for Komodo and Flores tomorrow morning at 8h. Done my packing and payed the accomodation. So I'll sign off for the next 4 days at least, since I won't have a connection till I get to Flores.

Hey Torsten, gz to your first underwater pix, and there is even a turtle on it, yeah :)
Are you using the right settings on your G11 Cam? There are underwater settings, which promotes the contrast of colours etc....give them a try.

for Info:
90.000,00 Indonesische Rupiah seit 01.04.2005 = 7.7643 Euro -- is this ok??

You may apply for a job as Diving instructor?! - in case you run out of money!!

hey there they are. Finaly the sharks and turtles :D

great pix´n´vids

Congratulations to the AOWD&ND. If it is "Heinrich" my Seaturtle, he/she likes to be fed with fresh 'underwater rolls' eating out of your hands - give him my regards - maybe see him later this year (November).
When you explore the island, go to the sunset point (obviously 30 Min. before sunset!!) , where the 2or3 roofed sunlounges are, and ask the man, who lives opposite for a nice, fresh fruit juce. -- Then dream (and think about the poor old people sitting in the hot sun in Germany)
IIn case you get a 'horse taxi' you can let the 'driver' go and walk the last 500m home to the bustling high street!
Have fun & stay healthy& Gute Reise

Hj Torsten,
since Anke posted the link to your blog here at work, I'm reading it once in a while.
You know what PADI stands for?
- Put Another Dollar In
- Pay And Die Immediately

Wow Torsten it sounds like you are having a great experience, and the pictures look fantastic. Long may it continue :-) xx

notjhing has changed since we were there a few years ago. - Probably nothing will change until some 'greedy idiot' allows some other 'greedy a-hole' to built a big Hotel on this little paradise.
Have a good trip to Flores.

oliver on

ConGratz to your advanced dive certificates. Great. Nice to hear the Leatherman is doing its job so well on the coconuts :). Have a very smooth boat trip. Looking forward to read on :)
