June 16 - Tarifa
Breakfast started at 8.15am and I wasn't the only one up and waiting beforehand. It was a fair breakfast too (freshly warmed rolls, jams, cakes and unlimited juice/tea/coffee), which is surprising in these places that include breakfast as they usually are strict in only 1 juice, cold toast etc.
I went to the Mezquite at 8.45 and walked straight in. There were several people in there before me and many of them had big cameras like mine. It was so nice to deal with other respectful photographers. I'm sick and tired of lining up my shot only to have someone walk straight through it or worse, park themselves in front of me while they take their own photo. The have no desire to check and see if they are walking in front of someone else... it's just me, me, me. I know I'm at big tourist places and it's bound to happen, but it happens almost EVERY TIME and I'm sick, sick, sick of it. Rant over.
This morning, people where looking, waiting and excusing themselves left, right and centre. They were also taking the same shot 3 or 4 times, just changing the settings on their camera... you could tell they were here for the photos. Just like me. LOL!
I was back at the hostel by 9.15 and checked out and jumped on a bus to the train station. My train left at 10.20 and for the first time since I started travelling on European railways I had to go through a metal detector before boarding. I don't why, the train wasn't any different from the others I've been on and it's not like Cordoba is a big city.
I arrived in Algecerias at 2pm and walked across the road to the bus station (I love it when I don't have to walk far with my backpack) and caught the bus to Tarifa (no train station). Tarifa is the southern most point of Spain and the closest point to Africa (only 14km). I called the hostel and they came and picked me up because they are 2km out of town.
Upon arrival at the hostel I walked into the bar and to the 'reception' desk without realising that I was standing in front of the projector which was showing the football... boy did I get yelled at! I moved PDQ.
Everyone in the bar fits into the surfer category, even though there is no surfing per se in Tarifa. There is, however, winds coming off the headlands and Tarifa is a windsurfer's Mecca. There is also a lot of kitesurfing and whatever kitelandboarding (riding a huge skateboard or a mini buggy along the beach whilst being pulled by a kite). So all the guys in the hostel were of the low slung boardies, tanned and buff 6-pack, sun bleached blonde hair variety... eye candy!
I went into the town on one of the 4 regular drop off/pick up trips at 6pm and walked around the town. I was looking for information about going to Morocco for the day tomorrow. I figure it's so close it would be a shame not to... plus I want to say I've been to Africa.
I found a day trip for E56 which is a great price in my opinion as to take the ferry by myself costs E29 EACH WAY - so I've already saved money. I went shopping for some groceries for breakfast and caught the 8pm shuttle back to the hostel. Spent the evening talking to other people also not interested in football.
