We absolutely loved Vegas... especially after LA where all we did was drive and get annoyed at the traffic! Poor J did all the driving as the car we have is pretty big and Im a bit scared of the huge trucks!! Anyway, we spent the evening in the casino wandering around looking at all it had to offer... high flying circus acts above the casino floor every half hour, hundreds of slot machines, craps, roulette, blackjack and poker, about 10 shops, krispy kreme donuts (lethal!!), Mcdonalds, 4 different restaurants, a big section of fairground type games, and an indoor theme park - all inside the hotel! It was pretty amazing and there are about 15-20 other hotels in vegas of the same size all with different themes and different attractions. We didnt play any of the tables on the first night but we did play the 'Deal or no Deal' slot machines and won about $40
On Friday we had lessons in our hotel for roulette, blackjack and craps by one of the supervisors - Chris, whos been gambling since he was 14! We left the craps lesson and had a go at blackjack where we promptly lost $30 - so we headed to the craps table where I had a knack for throwing the dice, making J and myself $100 and a drunk american several hundred dollars - none of which he shared - selfish!!! We werent too stupid though and walked away with the winnings, feeling very good about ourselves!
It absolutely tipped it down though on Friday which was a real shame as we wanted to explore... we did- only we went in our flip flops! (didnt know it was going to rain - its the desert! and later we were told they'd had a nine year drought!) One guy asked us if we were
Canadian! we told him we were English and he laughed saying he didn't think we were locals!
Anyway we eventually got to the MGM grand to buy some tickets for cirque du soleil - it took us about 2 hours on the local bus to go about 4 miles- you think England stops when it rains?! The MGM was amazing, really plush and posh
We went to see Ka that evening, it was really amazing, with fire balls, a rotating platform and fireworks at the end. Well worth the high price tag.
On Saturday (yesterday) we got up really early and got a bus for 6 hours to the Grand Canyon. On the way we stopped at The Hoover Dam and went on route 66 and got there at 12.30pm. We were told it would be a little cooler than Vegas, so we took our rain coats and jumpers and made sure we didnt wear our flip flops this time.. only when we got there, there was a foot and a half of snow!!! We couldnt believe it, this is still the desert, what on earth is going on? We've got some great video though and survived the 2.5 mile walk along the trail to the lodge where the bus picked us up - and without frostbite too which was a bonus!
Last night when we got back to the hotel and had tried to dry js shoes off with the hair dryer (to no avail) we headed to Fremont street to see the 'Fremont Street Experience' - the largest tv screen in the world, very impressive
This morning we tried again at craps and stayed in the game with $50 for about an hour (minimum bet is $5 so that was quite a long time) only we had a bad run and ended up with $4 which meant we could only bet on the next throw of the dice being a hard eight (two fours for those not in the know) the dealer then said do you want the bet to be "off". Not having a clue as to what this meant, J said 'okay', the dice landed on 7 so thought we had lost but as it was off we had one more chance and would you believe a hard eight came up winning us $40 (back in the game). We then had a bit of a run, but soon we were back to our last $4 so once again J put down the only bet we could do a hard 10 (2 fives), but now knowing that if the bet was off we wouldn't loose if a 7 was thrown J asked for the bet to be off. Amazing the dice rolled hard 10, J went crazy with excitment... at the top of his voice, but the table fell silent as the dealer advised "sir you asked for the bet to be off" we hadn't won, we had lost and walked away, $60 dollars down for the weekend, not bad as we had loads of fun.
So now we are back in LA after I drove us back (a little scared and slightly white knuckled most of the way!) and have just had Chinese take out (as the locals say) with Justin and Christa at their house in Rodondo Beach. We plan on going to Venice Beach tomorrow before returning the car at 4 and catching our plane to Fiji at 10 tom night. Hopefully there wont be snow there!! xx
ps there will be photos soon, only we havent had them put onto CD yet -sorry!
