Arrived at the LAX domestic terminal and it was 11:45 pm and I had no idea where to go to catch my international flight to Sydney on Qantas.  The shops and such were all closed so I went up to a desk with three policemen and asked for assistance.  They were so kind to me and pointed me in the right direction.  I had to go down the escalator and out of the building and take a bus to Terminal 4 (the only international flight out of Terminal 4 is Qantas to Sydney) rather than the International Terminal.  The bus driver wasn't supposed to take me to that terminal on his bus, but felt sorry for me at that time of night and dropped me by and I went in to the desk.  The American Airlines "queue" was very long but the Qantas one was empty so that was good fortune for me.  I only had about 30 minutes to make it to my gate before boarding.  I got through the security it record time - it took me extra time in Milwaukee as the company had only booked my tickets the day before so I had been flagged for special inspection of every piece of stuff I brought and a full body search. :)

I got to the gate and it was raining.  I was able to change my seat to an aisle so that I could get up and move around a bit and then boarded the plane.  The runway was wet and there was a bit of fuel or oil or something on the ground so the tractor that pushes the plane off from the gate couldn't push us.  Mind you I was traveling in a huge jumboliner that was massively heavy compared to all the other planes that come into that AA gate normally but it took 1.5 hours to get out of our gate.  It was a very long wait and we discovered during that time that our in seat entertainment units didn't work on this flight.  I now had 14 hours to look forward to entertaining myself - oh joy.  More on that later.  We did finally make it out from the gate and waiting in line for take off.
