Nice and Eze, France - Cruise 5
Entry 47 of 48 | show all | print this entry |
Today I received a tour for Nice and Eze, France. Nice is pronounced "niece" and Eze is pronounced "Ez", but our guide said in American accents we can pronounce them "Nice" and "Easy" if we wanted to. Nice sported a large famer's market in the center section of town where all the local growers brought in produce for sale. Like other European villages the streets were cobble and the buildings made from bricks and stones with narrow passageways connecting everything together. The toilet cost 60 cents Euro, but were very clean. There are local wine shops, bakeries, restaurants with outdoor seating, etc. along these streets and alleys - Europeans love outdoor spaces and with the distinct lack of mosquitoes who can blame them. Air-conditioning is also not used so heavily and so outdoor spaces have the breezes as well as social outlet for all ages but certainly for the senior aged men (their wives probably kick them out of the house during the day, or the men are escaping their nagging wives - depending on your perspective!). The village was quaint and very clean. The French Riviera is lovely and clean with friendly helpful people, not the stereotypical despisers of English language speakers you always hear about, as tourism is a primary industry here.
Eze is a beautiful historically preserved medieval age town with...a wall around it as it winds itself up and around a hillside. Throughout the journey to the top, where there is a lovely church, there are many shops, restaurants, spice sellers and historic places. The highlight for a vacationer would definitely be the resorts located in this town as they are literally balanced on the edge of the hill/mountain and have the sweeping overlook of the coast and water surrounding the village. Eze is definitely a must see in this region and I am only sad that our tour was so short we had to quickly climb up and back down without time to just wander and discover this gem on our own. I would definitely love to come back to this place some day and discover its secrets when I have more time to spend.
