Historic Dubrovnik, beautiful old architecture containing modern labels and wares.  Very perplexing combination.  The modern city surrounds the historic walled town.  Modern buildings, transportation, etc. feel at home there in the area rebuilt after the war.  Inside the old city are historic churches, the wall itself that can be traversed on foot after climbing many stairs.  All goods must be carried by hand or trucked in on hand carts or tiny trucks no bigger than a golf cart with small flatbeds attached.  The streets are cobble, restaurants cling to the shade in the alleys between buildings and a sense of history and relic overwhelms you, until you look into the shops and see reebok tennis shoes, Columbia Sportswear, modern clothing boutiques, etc. being pedaled to the unsuspecting guests.  There are characters wearing traditional old costumes to heighten the historical feel, but the mix of ancient history with modern creates an interesting atmosphere.  It is an old city that is used now, rather than a fake old city preserved and pretended upon.  I'm glad to have seen it and I recommend it highly.  Croatia is a beautiful country, so make the most of any opportunity that you have to visit.
