Monday 28th October - Day 35

This evening I went to check out a weekly outdoor concert featuring La Bomba de Tiempo, a percussion group that I'd been informed are absolutely unmissable. The event started at 8pm but I was running late and having walked along the street I'd been told it was on for quite a while, I began to wonder if I was lost. Doubts were pushed aside when I heard the drums from about half a kilometre away, which in a busy city is quite impressive!

La Bomba de Tiempo play every Monday in a courtyard surrounded by warehouses, a setting that in the cold light of day wouldn't appear to welcoming. But walking into it at night, packed with about 500 people and the band playing on a big stage, I could see why this event is unmissable. Their set began with the drums gently accompanying a very talented acoustic guitar-vocalist. Gradually the anticipation began to rise amongst the crowd and once the guitarist took his final bow there was a noticeable change in the atmosphere - party time! The amazing thing about La Bomba is their performance is improvised. The charismatic conductor, Oliva, directs every member of the group using an elaborate set of hand signals, all whilst throwing himself around the stage in a crazed performance.

Samba on steroids. I think thats the most appropriate way to describe La Bomba. They start off slow and build up each song to a deafening crescendo that has all 500 members of the crowd in a dancing frenzy. I saw a lot of incredible performances over the summer and La Bomba are way up there with the best.

Tuesday 29th October - Day 36

Anniversary looming, today I set about making a few arrangements. After hours of searching for a greetings card shop I returned a little dejected to the hostel. As it turns out, Argentinians don't have cards!

In the evening I joined a couple of Americans and a German fella for a few drinks in the bar. A few turned into a few more and then a few more after that!
