Todd woke for a predawn hike out to Landscape Arch (1 mile round-trip), but the picture he envisioned was partially in shadow from a large boulder (or small mountain).  Still, it was a nice hike, with mule deer and another beautiful sunrise.  Back to the camp site for coffee and breakfast and getting Kirsten out of the tent.  We packed up and got on the road for Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park.

Upon arrival, we found the canyon views to be staggering, enhanced by the constant play of shadow and light on the sheer canyon walls caused by scattered thunderstorms.  We set up camp, walked a 2-mile round trip hike along the canyon rim to the visitor center, saw the video, bought our medallion and went back to camp.  We then took a drive to the various viewpoints along the south rim of the canyon, each one as awe-inspiring as the last.  We ended up at Sunset View when a thunderstorm rolled in and kept us in the car for a while.  We popped a couple of beers, grabbed a snack, opened up our books, and cozied up for 45 minutes to an hour.  We were rewarded first with an extraordinary rainstorm down the length of the canyon, and then an even more eye-popping sunset through the clouds.  Todd photographed during breaks in the rain, and when it was dark we headed back to the campsite for the night.
