The next day we walked the twenty minutes to the centre of Auckland to make enquiries about our WWOOFing memberships at one of the backpackers in town. We then made phone calls to some of the WWOOF hosts to arrange a stay with them for the following day. We also had a nice alfresco lunch in Albert Park, where we enjoyed the beautiful sunshine without the festering, sweat inducing, sticky heat of Asia. It was like a summers day in the UK, warm with a slight breeze. There was even that "summery" smell of ozone in the air, and that combined with some excellent brie and a french loaf, we were very content.
Aukland is okay for a city, very clean, great bus service, lunatics throwing themselves off the Sky City, a huge tower in the centre of Auckland!!! These Kiwis are insane, after all, they had the idea of strapping some elastic to your feet and throwing yourself from a bridge, or climbing inside a giant hamster ball while somebody pushes you down a hill. As well as this tendancy to push one closer to ones maker, they are very friendly. The backpackers we stayed in was afriendly place and when we had left to catch our bus to our next destination, we'd realised we had forgotten to collect the $20 deposit we'd paid for the keys. Amazingly, the very same receptionist who was working at the backpackers that morning strolled into the cafe where we were deliberating wether to go back and get our cash. What a coinsidence!!
Jo promted me to go and tell her of our predicament and when I'd explained the situation she calmy told me "no worries" and took the twenty out of her own pocket with a reassurance that she'd settle it up with the owner when she got back to work on Monday! What a diamond!!!
