It has taken over two months for me to find work and then I get two jobs in two days!
The first is a temporary (4 week) IT support job that will see me working for the Snowy Mountain Engineering Corporation, starting this week. See www.smec.com.au They are consultancy company, working in various fields including consulting services in physical infrastructure (water, transport, energy), urban planning, social infrastructure (education, health, public sector reform) and environmental analysis. So all in all, pretty interesting really!
The second is a customer service type role, working for the motor recovery offshoot of a large insurance organisation. This will see me working as a Breakdown Assistance co-ordinator organising recovery vehicles to go out to broken down vehicles. The fascinating thing about this is that we are providing assistance to people in the UK when in daytime here, it is night at home.
Two other people started here on the same day as myself. Apparently they are the fourth biggest operator in this field (after the AA, RAC and Green Flag), so you could say they are the fourth, fourth emergency service! I have just done my first days work for them today. All went well, apparently they don't want us telling customers where we are operating from, we were in fits of laughter when a customer on speaker phone thought we were in Bombay or somewhere. Our official line is that we operate from somewhere "just outside out of London!". We are only a few thousand miles further away than Bombay!
Both of my jobs are in roughly the same area of Sydney. More specifically, one is in North Sydney and another in an area called Crows Nest. Just two stops apart on the train. This means that I can rather conveniently get a weekly Travelpass that gives me access to the train and bus ride I need for each trip to and from work, as well as transport through most of the rest of the centre of Sydney.
The other good thing about this is that I get to go over the harbour bridge twice a day on the train. There is a great view from the bridge in both directions, including the Opera House. Not a bad way to start and end the day!
Other stuff I have been upto recently - apart from looking for work - includes going to see a talk by Nancy Cartwright. Nancy is the voice behind Bart Simpson, as well as a few other characters in the Simpsons. Including Nelson, Rod and Todd Flanders and of course Ralph Wiggum. It was interesting hearing about her work and also just to see the voice of Bart coming from someone who you just would not imagine the voice to come from. Nancy is also the voice behind Chuckie from the Rugrats. See
Also recently we went out to celebrate James' birthday. We went to a restaurant in Kings Cross, Sydney called Govinda's. It is an interesting place as all the food is vegetarian food, prepared by Hari Krisna's. Before or after the meal you can view one of the two films they show each night. In the boutique cinema (as it is called on the website), the seating is mainly on couches or cushions. It is a nice place worth a visit if you are ever in the area! See www.govindas.com.au www.govindas.com.au
That is about all I can think of for now.
I hope everyone back at home is well.
Bye for now
