The biggest adjustment so far is getting used to the standard of the facilities in China. I have a new-found appreciation of the dorms and public restrooms in America, no matter how much I complained about them! The standard here means electronics, water, and plumbing is working, but not necessarily squeaky clean.. It's been interesting! Not to mention, we rely heavily on bottled water because the tap water isn't drinkable here. The bathroom is the hardest part to get used to, but thank goodness for a western toilet.. but mine is currently not flushing, lol
The flight to China was so long, it felt like I was stuck in that little space for like a week! Arriving in Shanghai was intimidating, but fortunately I found my group and got through customs and everything okay! As of today, I have met everyone on the program and everyone is nice and a lot of fun!
I got to visit the Chinese Wal-mart yesterday, and let me just say.. over here it's equivalent to our Targets! They have everything there! That was an experience, we took a taxi there and back, and it was pouring on our way back, we got drenched! It's so weird to pull out 100-dollar bills to pay for just a few items.. but in reality, everything really is cheaper than they are in the states! With the exception of electronics though!
The food here is so amazing and super cheap! Today I had breakfast for $2 USD and it was a full meal! We also tried the local KFC just for fun yesterday.. and I can't say I'm gonna wanna go back there again, lol. There so much fresh fruits and vegetables lining the back streets! Yesterday, we walked by a lady that was skinning chickens, right in the middle of broad daylight on the sidewalk.
One of the most shocking things about China is the driving! Chinese people DO NOT follow road rules, nor yield for pedestrians on crosswalks.. it is SO frustrating and scary! Sitting on the bus or in a taxi is also scary, but I'd rather it be the driver and not me behind the wheel! People cut in front of others without warning and get road rage so easily!
I get to meet my roommate tomorrow! I am looking forward to it! Classes start on Monday! It's gonna be kind of brutal, I have class from 9-12 four mornings a week and 1-4 three evenings a week. I'm still looking forward to it though!
There is so much I wish I could write about but recalling everything is just not happening right now! Hopefully, I'll get my internet working in my room and I'll be able to talk to everyone on skype or something! Love and miss you all! I hope you're doing well! :)
