What I did
Of course, that didn't mean we'd forsake a good greasy-spoon breakfast, so we made our way back toward town to The Curve restaurant, where we found a talkative, friendly waitress named Cathy just waiting to serve us eggs, Kielbasa and "American fries."
After the short, but wonderful ferry ride, we remembered we'd left all of our refrigerated stuff in the refrigerator at the apartment, about 30 miles away. We returned to get it and luckily were able to get back into the apartment to retrieve our cold cuts, mayo and beer.
The lost hour behind us, we headed west toward St. Paul, stopping at a park in Wisconsin Dells (or as we called it, Gatlinburg Midwest) for a picnic lunch.
We had decided to make some time by using the interstate, but it only took about an hour of that nonsense to come to our senses and head over the Mississippi at La Crosse and take Minnesota's Great River Road. A good choice.
Making our way to St. Paul, we got in touch with John and Toni, who suggested we eschew the 97° weather at the Fair and eat dinner in their Lowertown St. Paul neighborhood. After a great dinner (which in Minnesota style included tater tots), we took the Toni Wilcox Tour of Lowertown St. Paul, which ended, to my great delight, in her (air-conditioned) Hip Urban Loft I've heard so much about. We got back to our apartment, exhausted, and slept soundly all night.
But we didn't make it to the Fair. Or did we? Tune in for the next installment to hear all about it ...
