After leaving JFK in the middle of the night, I slept pretty much all of both flights to Guatemala city because sleeping is something I have gotten very good at.. At customs the lady asked me all these questions in Spanish and I just smiled and nodded and luckily she was happy with that. Once I made it outside, there was no sign of my friend Natalia who was supposed to pick me up. She had told me of all the dangers of Guatemala city so waiting around I wasn't feeling too comfortable, and looking like the gringo I am, I was approached with all sorts of offers from taxis to phone calls. Luckily after about 20 minutes, natalia and her grandmother showed up and took me to their house. It was nice to stay at a proper home after 2 months of hostels and it was great having homecooked meals.

For the weekend Natalia had planned for us to go to her family's beach house. We headed out with one car and 3 of her friends for about an hours drive. Arriving at the place, I was amazed at how nice the place was. It looked like a mini resort with pool and a outside bar. Later more of natalias friends joined us and we ended up being a good group of about 14 people. They all spoke English but most of the time Spanish was spoken but I didn't mind as this would help me learn Spanish and after enough beers i could understand and speak Spanish perfectly... Sorta...

A couple of days later I managed to get to Antigua which is a place an hour outside Guatemala city and it's the place where most travelers go to learn spanish or volunteer. When I got to the hostel I booked, i found that there was no one else there. I was the only one. Somehow I still managed to meet some people, one of which was a local who showed us the places to go out. The next day I found out which hostels were busier and found a Spanish school for the next week.

On the weekend I went back to Guatemala city because natalia had gotten me a ticket to a high school graduation party. Unfortunately I had forgotten to pack my tuxedo when I left NZ so I had to rent one and managed to find one for $35. The party was great. Every graduate gets to invite 12 people and there were about 300 graduates. So it was a party with 3000 people.
