Santorini is my favourite place, it is absolutely stunning. I was sad to leave. It seems so unfair that we were only there for 3 or 4 hours, but I'm stuck in horrible Athens for 3 days. Santorini is a small, circular archipelago of volcanic islands located in the southern Aegean Sea, about 200 km southeast from Greece's mainland. It is essentially what remains of an enormous volcanic explosion, destroying the earliest settlements on what was formerly a single island, and leading to the creation of the current geological caldera. Its spectacular physical beauty amazed me. After a very precarious journey up the cliff on a donkey to the town, Melanie and I went to a rooftop restaurant, hanging over the cliff, to watch the incredible sunset. I was worried about my donkey - they gave me a really tiny one, and I was concerned that it wouldn't be able to hold me. It seemed alright though, and got me to the top safely. Never mind about stirrups or helmet or lead rope though, we just held on for dear life like a piece of baggage, while the donkey took us up to the top on its own. When it got too close to the walls, I tried to steer it like a horse, but it didn't work. At the restaurant, we ate Greek olive tapenade and bread, then the best grilled calamari I've ever tasted. The wine was local to Santorini and was excellent. This is saying something, because all the Greek wine I tried before this was not nice. The town, Fira, clings to the top of the cliff looking down on the lagoon, and is all white like Mykonos. It cascades down the side, like an amphitheatre (like Amalfi coast). I will definitely be back some day.
