Mykonos is a small, incredibly dry little island, dotted with white, square houses, all with blue shutters and doors. The white houses are to reflect the heat, and they look quite good. It is so dry that basically nothing grows there - everything needs to be shipped from Athens. First we checked out Little Venice, which was a slight disappointment - just a few houses that were so close to the sea that they had their balconies over the water. I've been to Venice and to Coron in the Philippines, and they are much more exciting. Venice is riddled with canals - a whole city built on a lagoon; and all the rich people in Coron build their houses far out into the water, with a jetty to reach it. All the houses are on stilts and made of bamboo - very precarious structures (a few people fell through the floor into the water while I was there). Another attraction was the windmills, which are quite cute, but didn't need to stay looking at them for too long. After a stroll around the white town, Melanie and I got a bus to Paradise beach, where all the young people go to swim naked, as our tour guide told us. We found a beach party and relaxed on the beach with Calamari and daiquiris, and watched the sunset. The music got steadily worse as the night went on, and an Italian man with a microphone, in a g string with huge black spikes started telling all the girls to "open your minds, open your pussy", yelling a lot about 'Australianas' and 'Aussie aussie aussie' (I hate that), and yabbering on in Italian. It is apparently a popular holiday destination for Italians. There were some trashy dancers on the podiums, and trashy music about licking pussy. It was cross between a shit version of Ibiza, and expensive version of Thailand. After the music started to grate on my brain, we left and walked around the white town, getting lost in the tiny streets, some of which didn't have names. It was a maze of white. There were even shops that were full of white things, called things like "White shop". Everything was incredibly overpriced, so didn't buy anything. On the way back to the cruise ship we saw octopi hanging out to dry on a boat. The cruise ship left someone behind who didn't get back in time; I wonder what they will do.
