Just got back from a crazy weekend in England with Stu, Miele, Rob, and various other lovely chaps. It was the Big Chill, my first proper English festival. We camped in the mud and our own filth for 4 days. I didn't shower. It didn't matter though, I reached a comfortable plateau of dirtiness, and everyone was dirty. It rained every day and I wore wellingtons and 4 layers of clothing. I reminisced with old friends. I changed my vocabulary so English people knew what I was talking about. Flipflops. Trousers. Crisps. I discovered a lot of phrases that I like very much. For instance, "you havin a giraffe?". Love it. It was colder than an Australian Winter, and I finally understood how awful English weather really is. Rob fulfilled his desire to wear a frilly pink dress, but didn't get to keep it, as he spent all his money on cider. We joined a drum circle, and sat in a tepee with a fire in it. We traipsed about for miles, up and down rolling country hills. I saw the Mighty Boosh, and they threw a bag of shit into the crowd. A 14 year old collapsed and had a fit in the audience. 10 year olds tried to push bits of wax as drugs. Camille was insane. Everyone wore ponchos and wellies. Everything was wet. My tiny, cramped tent filled up with water on the first night and everything I owned got soaked. We bought a new one (waterproof this time). I spent a ridiculous amount of money on overpriced, but quite nice festival food and Cider. I spent $10 on a pie. But it was worth it. I really wanted that pie, and enjoyed it immensely. In fact, I hate camping, I hate cold, I hate mud, I hate being dirty and wet, I hate walking around in the countryside all day, I hate being tired; but it was all part of the fun. I think it was really good for me to leave my comfort zone for a while and to extend that zone to include something like this. We spent our days drifting about, taking in the atmosphere and music and having an excellent time. It was a very uninhibited, chilled out vibe.
