Ok, I have about 25 minutes to type this entry as we then have to run across the road to catch a typical Kandian (Sri Lankan) dance. I'm a slow typer, so I'll make it brief...
New Year's eve was spent in the state capital, Trivandrum. It has another, longer name. But it's really, really long, and would take ages to type and spell so I won't bother (albeit not as long as this excuse took). Ok I'll tell you it after all since you're clearly disappointed. Even though it means opening another browser window to check it on Wikipedia....(honestly, the things I do for you lot)... Right, the name is (cue drum roll): "Thiruvananthapuram".
I'm not typing that again. Ever. So there.
Anyway, we had a very easy one hour train journey from Varkala to 'T', even though a huge brigade of yellow-saried women had all decided also to travel on New Year's Eve as well (photo soon). We found a pleasant and very cheap room at Green Land Hotel and then had a wander round, trying to find somewhere to spend NYE that wasn't either hideously kitsch or hideously expensive. We had an excellent lunchtime thali at Arya Niwas restaurant and then rested until it was time to put on our glad rags for the evening's festivities. My glad rags, by the way, simply consist of a slightly nicer pair of flip-flops than my everyday travelling sandals, but it's the thought that counts.
We found a nice bar to hole up in, on the ground floor of the Horizon Hotel. True, R was the only female there, but no one stared too much and our waiter brought us crisps with our beers and Planter's Punch cocktails. It was a very good evening indeed - low key but enjoyable, and both of us were excited about the prospect of heading to a new country the next day. A different, but fun way to usher in 2007. (T)
