Despite their assurances that it wouldn't be as cold, I had headed back to El Chalten after lunch and left Tim and Amy to continue to Cerro Torre. On arriving back at the hostel I was adopted by Cecilia, the mama duck of the hostel and fed hot bean stew (with the spicy sausage picked out). Tim and Amy spent an even more miserable night and didn't even get to see CT as it was too cloudy. We took the 1pm bus back to El Calafate and booked tix for Chilean Puerto Natales bright and early the next morning.
Our plan had been to return to the magnificent Torres del Paine, so far the most spectacular place we've seen in the world, but then decided with our limited time budget, to just head to Ushuaia in Tierra del Fuego, via Punta Arenas to shop. I had wanted to buy the young Dexter a cute llama wool and pattern jumper/mitten/hat combo I remembered from last year, but because of the gale force winds, the indigenous market stalls weren't open.
